Campaign to Win: YAP November Meet-Up

YAP_Campaign_to_Win_Dinner.jpg

This dinner will be an opportunity for young people (30 and under) to learn how to design and contribute to a campaign that effectively changes the unfair policies affecting people seeking asylum. This will give us an opportunity to reflect on what we could change for 2018 and on how our individual skills and experiences can give us unique power in the movement.

Speakers:

Marcella Brassett: Marcella works as campaign manager for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and volunteers as a cross cultural political campaigner. She is a communications and campaigns professional that has campaigned and organised for forest protection, climate justice, human rights and anti-racism and has worked on four election campaigns, including for Rob Pyne (QLD), Alex Bhathal in 2016 and Adam Bandt MP in 2013.  Over ten years, Marcella has worked and campaigned with communities ranging from Waarlpiri Indigenous (central desert), refugees and people seeking asylum to Australian-Muslims.

Amir Abdi: Amir is a young advocate, working to create positive change around the rights of people seeking asylum and the blind community. He has worked with the Red Cross to develop a program called In Search of Safety and regularly visits schools as a guest speaker to talk about what it is like to be a person who is currently seeking asylum. He also plays Goalball and Soccer at a national and an international level. Amir also fits in studying health science at Deakin University into his schedule and enjoys to read, play guitar and check out different coffee shops with good company.

Laura Melville: Laura is the Organising Program Manager at the AYCC, supporting their huge grassroots network across the country. Laura has been with the AYCC since 2012 as Victorian State Coordinator, Administration Officer and Organiser. Laura is passionate about building a powerful youth climate justice movement. She recently managed Power Shift 2017 where 800 young people came together over 3 days to learn, grow and get fired up to take climate action.

We will also hear from Yappers who are taking action in their local community. Hopefully this will give you an opportunity to join an existing campaign, or get some ideas for starting your own community action.
